"It’s difficult for me to say exactly why I photograph billboards. It’s probably related to the fact that I started out as a painting major in college and have never stopped seeing the world as a collection of colors, shapes and textures. So when I see a particularly striking arrangement of those things, as I often do in billboards, I record it with my camera. My view is that the people who put advertising images up on billboards, and take them down, are great unacknowledged artists. They probably don’t even think of themselves that way, which makes their unintentional creations all the more fascinating."
